PR Director

The Syrian American Council (SAC) is looking for a Public Relations Director to cultivate and maintain positive media coverage for Syria’s struggle for freedom and democracy, the Syrian American Council and its projects, and the broader Syrian American community. SAC is the largest Syrian-American community organization in the United States, including members from all segments of Syrian society in 22 chapters across the United States. Its activities range from community organizing and awareness-raising to political advocacy, media outreach and other kinds of support for Syrians seeking to build a free and democratic Syria.

The Public Relations Director will build and direct SAC’s media outreach team, manage and execute public relations and communications initiatives for SAC’s national team, and coordinate media appearances and interviews for SAC’s members across the country. S/he will lead SAC’s strategic PR efforts and collaborate with members and staff to raise awareness of the crisis in Syria, and of SAC’s efforts aimed at its peaceful resolution.

This is a full-time, paid position. Location: Capitol Hill, Washington DC

Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree (or education/experience equivalent) in public relations, journalism, communications, or related field
  • Minimum 4 years proven public relations experience, with a focus on media relations
Required Skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the dynamics/specificities of the Syrian revolution
  • Ability to lead and think strategically
  • Solid and concise writing and speaking skills
  • Strong media relations and PR skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects on tight deadlines
  • Fluency in Arabic required (Syrian dialect strongly preferred)

Intern-Community Outreach and Grassroots Advocacy

The Syrian American Council (SAC) is looking for a Community Outreach and Grassroots Advocacy Intern to assist with membership outreach and engagement and grassroots advocacy campaigns in support of Syria’s struggle for freedom and democracy. SAC is the largest Syrian-American community organization in the United States, including members from all segments of Syrian society in 22 chapters across the United States. Its activities range from community organizing and awareness-raising to political advocacy, media outreach and other kinds of support for Syrians seeking to build a free and democratic Syria.

As a valued member of SAC’s Chapter Outreach and Development team, the Community Outreach and Grassroots Advocacy Intern will assist the Director of Operations and Development with membership outreach and coordination activities. S/he will work to develop and maintain a membership database, update contact information for community leaders and speakers across the country, draft and update informational materials, and perform other office duties as required.

This is a full-time, unpaid position that will last for a negotiable period of time

Location: Capitol Hill, Washington D.C.

Intern—New Media

The Syrian American Council (SAC) is looking for a New Media Intern to help build, promote, and maintain SAC’s presence on various social media outlets. SAC is the largest Syrian-American community organization in the United States, including members from all segments of Syrian society in 22 chapters across the United States. Its activities range from community organizing and awareness-raising to political advocacy, media outreach and other kinds of support for Syrians seeking to build a free and democratic Syria.

As a valued member of SAC’s Public Relations Team, the New Media Intern will assist the Director of Public Relations with managing SAC’s online presence and messaging. S/he will help craft and execute social media awareness campaigns and will use social media to promote SAC, its activities, and its causes.

This is a full-time, unpaid position that will last for a negotiable period of time

Event Coordination Volunteer

The Syrian American Council (SAC) is looking for an as-needed Event Coordination Volunteer to assist with planning one-time events and national speaking tours. SAC regularly holds community events, and occasionally organizes national speaking tours for prominent academic, political, and religious leaders of interest to the Syrian American community. SAC is the largest Syrian-American community organization in the United States, including members from all segments of Syrian society in 22 chapters across the United States. Its activities range from community organizing and awareness-raising to political advocacy, media outreach and other kinds of support for Syrians seeking to build a free and democratic Syria.

As a valued member of SAC’s Chapter Outreach and Development team, the Event Coordination Volunteer will assist the Director of Operations and Development with planning SAC’s community events and speaking tours. S/he will work to make logistical arrangements for events and make hotel and travel arrangements for speakers, and work to promote events once they are planned.

This position is advertised for an “as needed” volunteer because such events often happen irregularly, depending on public interest in Syria. A motivated candidate interested in taking on more full-time responsibility for creating, managing, and planning events and campaigns should express such interest in their cover letter.

This position would be unpaid and could be done remotely, but proximity to Washington DC would be advantageous.
