Dear Community Member,

The Syrian American Community invites you to commemorate the third year anniversary of the Syrian Revolution and honor the sacrifices made by the Syrian people. Let us join together in solidarity with the resilient Syrian people as they strive towards freedom and dignity.

Together, over this anniversary weekend, we will mourn the deaths of our martyrs and the mass destruction in our country. Together, we will raise awareness and support for the millions of displaced and suffering Syrians. Together, we will celebrate our people's courage and determination. Together, we will remember what unites us as Syrians: our shared history and culture. Together, we will reject imposed divisions from the outside and embrace hope that radiates from inside Syria. Together, we will move forward with one agenda: A Peaceful & Free Syria for All Syrians.

It is time to unite for Syria. To stop the bloodshed. To embrace peace. To rebuild our country. Join us.

#GlobalQiyam4Syria

SAC is joining organizations around the globe this Friday, May 17, 2013, for a Global Qiyam for Syria. Dozens of organizations will come together in unity to show solidarity and pray for the people of Syria, and to mobilize communities across the nation and beyond to take action.

To fully appreciate the magnitude of this tragedy, look at the following statistics provided by CNN:
  • 70,000: The estimated death toll as of mid-February, according to the United Nations Human Rights Center.
  • 22,530,746: Syria’s estimated population in July 2012, according to the CIA World Factbook.
  • 0.311: Approximate percentage of the Syrian population killed so far. For comparison’s sake, 0.311% of the population would be 976,066 people for the United States, 196,077 people for the United Kingdom and 4,177,476 people for China, the world’s most populous country.
  • 3,043: Average number of deaths per month.

While these numbers are appalling, CNN continues, “And that might be an underestimate. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Syria’s raging civil war has made it “increasingly challenging” to collect accurate and reliable data.” Talk with Syrian friends and these numbers turn to horrific images of murder, plunder, rape, displacement and psychological torture.

SAC encourages its members to join a local #GlobalQiyam4Syria or organize one. Click here to learn how to organize a local Qiyam.

We urge all participants in the #GlobalQiyam4Syria to take this opportunity and mobilize the community to act. Here’s what YOU can do to help Syria:
  • Donate generously to relief organizations providing aid to the victims of the two-year brutal crackdown
  • Donate to SAC to help us continue our work to advocate for Syria.
  • Write Op-Eds and Letters to the Editor that highlight the danger of ignoring the fight for dignity and freedom in Syria.
  • Print this leaflet and distribute it to raise awareness about the suffering in Syria. Find more resources here.
  • Advocate for Syria by contacting your elected officials and ask them to co-sponsors the Free Syria Act of 2013 and the the Syria Democratic Transition Act of 2013.

ADVOCACY DAY: APRIL 25, 2013

Please MARK YOUR CALENDARS – THURSDAY and FRIDAY, APRIL 25 & 26 -- for DC Advocacy Day.

Come to Washington and directly lobby House and Senate offices on Thursday and Friday, April 25 & 26 , 2013, to support the Syrian revolution.

There are signs of bipartisan support and demand for action calling for increased US engagement in support of Syria's revolution for democracy and human rights. Now it's time for YOU to speak to your Members of Congress and urge them to join!

How to participate:

Step 1: Contact Joel Bombardier at JoelBombardier@gmail.com or Jason Hunt at jhunt@sacouncil.com to sign up. Give him/her your ZIP code so (s)he can schedule a meeting with the appropriate member of Congress. Please also tell him/her if you have met with your Representative or Senators before. (If you have, the personal connection may make it easier for you to get a meeting.)

Step 2: Plan your trip. Please plan to arrive in Washington, DC Wednesday evening, April 24th. We will hold a brief orientation session early Thursday morning, where we will give you materials to take with you to your meeting, update you on the relevant pieces of legislation, and answer any questions you may have.

Step 3: Meet with your Representative or Senator and ask them to vote for legislation that supports Syria’s revolution for democracy and human rights! Congress does not have the power to order intervention, but they can set aside money for programs to increase humanitarian aid, help support civilian governance efforts in the liberated areas, help rebuild Syria, and pressure President Obama to take assertive action.

Congress is considering action, but we need YOUR support to make sure they follow through!

While in Aleppo, SAC board member Kenan Rahmani witnessed regime airstrikes hit Tal Refat, where 18 civilians were killed and many others injured. Neighborhoods in different regions of Aleppo province were aerially shelled while others were targeted with heavy artillery. During his trip, Kenan learned that courage is contagious. He witnessed a horrifying attack in Tel Refaat, met with leaders of the civilian administrative councils, and conducted programs for refugee children in Turkey.

On Sunday December 16th you are invited to learn how love drives thousands of Americans across the country to do whatever it takes to support Syria's people. SAC's grassroots volunteers lead the agenda of the largest and oldest Syrian American organization in the nation. When the Syrian Revolution began volunteers decided to amplify the courageous voices of Syrians protesting for democracy and liberation. So they opened an office only a few steps from the United States Congress and sponsored Syrian activi
sts to carry Syria's brave message. Today the seed of our volunteers efforts have grown to make SAC a powerful movement with staff in Washington D.C., New York, and California. While fears of chemical weapons and of an impending "failed state" dominate discussions on Syria, a narrative is being largely lost: civil leaders inside Syria who are taking matters into their own hands. Civilian administrative councils have emerged throughout Syria in so-called “liberated zones.” Civilians are organizing for purposes of administering basic municipal services and law and order as they prepare for a post-Assad future. What do these pockets of self-governed territory look like and how can they be sustained? What is the relationship between the civilian councils and the military brigades? How can the United States most effectively help civilian units prepare for a post-Assad future? Please join the New America Foundation's Middle East Task Force for a conversation with Mohammed A. Ghanem, senior political advisor at the Syrian American Council, who has just returned from Syria. Ghanem will discuss how Syrian civilians are creating a government of their own and how this movement may impact the country's future. On Twitter? Follow @MidEastChannel and use #SyriaTransition for updates.      Featuring   Mohammed A. Ghanem  Senior Political Advisor, Syrian American Council Leila Hilal Director, Middle East Task Force, New America Foundation

End Date: Wednesday, 26 September 2012
Start Time: 11:00
Duration: No duration!
Location: U.N. Plaza
Walid Muallem, the Foreign Minister of the Assad regime is a principal orchestrator of the war against the Syrian people. After joining the Syrian Foreign Ministry in 1964 Muallem has served the regime for 40 continuous years. From 1990 to 2000, he served Hafez al-Assad as Syria's ambassador to the United States. After a brief stint as Deputy Foreign Minister, in 2006 Muallem replaced the notorious thug Farouk al-Sharaa to become Syria's Foreign Minister. Muallem will be attending the UN Summit in New York
Members of the Syrian American Council, as well as activists from numerous groups will be protesting his presence at the Summit. However, this is not enough for such a despicable man. The entire Syrian American community must make it clear to Walid Muallem, the Minister of Massacre, that his time and the time of the Assad regime has come to an end. On Wednesday, September 26th, the Syrian American Council asks that everyone concerned about the welfare of besieged Syrian people join together for a day of protest to tell Walid Muallem, the Minister of Massacre, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Assad's enabler, that they are not welcome in the United States. The rally will take place at Daag Hamarskjold Plaza (UN Plaza 47th & 2nd) on Wednesday, September 26 at 11:00 a.m.

On September 11, 2012, the US ambassador to Libya was tragically killed, along with four other Americans, in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The Washington DC Muslim community is organizing an emergency candlelight vigil in honor of Ambassador Christopher Stevens.Ambassador Stevens played a vital role in supporting the Libyan people during their struggle against the former dictator Gaddafi and was a strong presence in the most recent months in Libya. He was loved and respected by the Libyan American community, as he was a positive presence and truly loved the Libyan people and culture.
The acts of these few misguided individuals are horrific and simply do not represent Islam. We stand together as a community to make it known that those that took part in these tragic events do not represent the Libyan people nor do they represent Muslims worldwide. The Washington DC Muslim community stands against such violence and will hold a vigil downtown to condemn these horrific crimes. Please come and show your support. Bearing Witness to Syria's Tragedies

The New America Foundation's Middle East Task Force and American Syrian Coalition (ASC) wishes to invite you to a discussion with Rev. Paolo Dall'Oglio on the revolution inside Syria and future prospects for the country. Special thanks to coalition member Syrian American Council for helping bring Father Paolo to Washington D.C.
Father Paolo, an Italian Jesuit priest, was expelled by the Syrian government a month ago for his sympathy with the pro-democracy movement and his outspoken criticism of the government's repression. Father Paolo left behind a 30 year long legacy of promoting interfaith dialogue, having helped to restore a 1,000 year old monastery in Nebek, north of Damascus, which became a site of Christian and Muslim understanding and welcomed all faiths. What are the prospects for political and religious unity among the opposition? What is the likely impact of a new Syrian government with much broader ethnic and religious representation should the current Regime fall? What avenues for action does the international community have so long as Russia and China remain opposed to pressure? Father Paolo will speak about the dynamics between different minority groups, the current state of play on the ground, and focus especially on what lies ahead. Featured Speaker Father Paolo Dall'Oglio          Italian Jesuit Priest Moderator Leila Hilal Director, Middle East Task Force New America Foundation Tuesday, July 24, 2012 12:15 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. New America Foundation 1899 L St. NW Suite 400 Washington DC, 20036 To RSVP for the event, click on the red button or go to the event page:    http://newamerica.net/events/2012/bearing_witness_to_syria_s_tragedies  For questions, contact Stephanie Gunter at New America at (202) 596-3367 or gunter@newamerica.net.
