Premier of Music Video for ‘Man of Peace’ From Award-Winning Documentary ‘Little Gandhi’

WASHINGTON D.C., June 20, 2019 – The Syrian American Council has proudly sponsored U.S. screenings of the award-winning documentary and Syria's first official entry into the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, “Little Gandhi.” These powerful screening and panel discussion events helped spread the inspirational and heart-wrenching story of Syrian peace activist Ghiyath Matar.

Today, on World Refugee Day, the Syrian American Council is proud to share the premier of the official music video for the single “Man of Peace,” which was composed for the film “Little Gandhi” by Dylan Connor, Syrian American Council’s Chair of Missions.

“Man of Peace” was written to honor the memory of Ghiyath Matar, who led a peaceful pro-democracy movement in Darayya during the early days of the Syrian Revolution. He gained international recognition and the nickname “Little Gandhi” for his commitment to nonviolence and was famous for facing down the guns of Syrian regime soldiers with bottles of water and white roses. Matar and his fellow activists were inspired by the non-violent activism of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. He was arrested in 2011 and tortured to death by the Syrian regime.

"Little Gandhi" received the Excellence in Filmmaking Award at the 2016 European Independent Film Festival (Paris) and the Best Foreign Documentary Award at the 2016 International Family Film Festival (Hollywood, California). Screenings of the film have been held for Members of the U.S. Congress, Members of the Canadian Parliament, and United Nations representatives in New York. 

"Little Gandhi" – dubbed “a remarkable and vitally important film” by Amnesty International – was directed by Sam Kadi, the multi-award winning Syrian American director behind heavily acclaimed film "The Citizen." The documentary was released earlier this year in the United States, and is now publicly available on Amazon, iTunes, and on DVD. The music video for “Man of Peace” was directed by Briana Man.
