Last week, I was sent a 260-page pdf file for an upcoming auction in Paris. It was filled with exquisite 16th-century Isfahan rugs, 18th-century original French art pieces, magnificent chandeliers with a starting bid of 50,000 euros, a gilded chest of drawers, and more than 500 opulent pieces for sale starting today, Thursday, January 12th. I was surprised to hear my contact inform me that it all once belonged to the former Syrian Regime Vice-President-in-Exile Rifaat Al-Assad. This news led me down a rabbit hole of illicit wealth and luxurious art owned by the robber barons of Syria.
Before sharing the news, I wanted to be sure about the collection’s previous owner, so I reached out to the auctioneering firm, Ader, and a French journalist colleague to verify the lead. It was all adding up; the auction was titled “A Mansion on Avenue Foch”. The ‘Butcher of Hama’ (aka Rifaat al-Assad) was known to have a luxurious private mansion at 38 Avenue Foch in Paris, and he had just absconded to Syria, ending his almost 40-year exile. He fled France In October of 2021 to avoid a 4-year prison sentence after being convicted of embezzlement of Syrian state funds.
The French government had started looking into his illicit wealth years before. In 2016 they charged him with misappropriation of Syrian state funds and identified two major sources of his filthy lucre. His first source of illicit income came from his time as head of his infamous personal paramilitary group, ‘the Defense Companies (سرايا الدفاع).’ And the second source, as many Syrians are aware, came from the over $300 million bribe his brother, Hafez Al-Assad, paid him to leave the country after a failed coup attempt in 1984, most of which came from a ‘presidential fund.’
As I continued to process the evidence, it became clear that this auction contained items bought in blood money. My contact let me know that the items were part of an asset seizure by the French government and that a library collection of Arabic works was seized in addition to the art. Yesterday morning, my journalist colleague emailed me a French-language news article confirming our suspicions that the luxurious contents of the auction did indeed belong to Rifaat Al-Assad. I even double-checked to ensure that the early 18th-century Dutch painting for sale as lot #79 is, in fact, the same painting featured in an interview Rifaat Al-Assad conducted with the media in his home many years ago.
Please peruse through the auction catalog and catch a glimpse of the fabulous lifestyle of the family that grew wealthy on the backs of impoverished Syrians. At a time when our people are struggling to afford even the most basic necessities, the regime's propaganda machine blames the wretched state of the economy, hyper-stagflation, and fuel shortages on Western sanctions rather than taking responsibility for a kleptocratic family that has engaged in a 50-year con to rob the Syrian people of their wealth.

مزاد علني في باريس يعرض جُزءاً من ثروة رفعت الأسد الخياليّة
تلقّيتُ في الأسبوع الماضي كُتيّباً على شكل ملفّ الكتروني من 260 صفحة لمزاد علنيّ سيقامُ في باريس لأثاثِ قصر كامل، فيه تُحَفٌ مُذهلة كثيرة منها سُجّاد عجمي رائع من أصفهان من القرن السّادس عشر، ولوحات فنّيّة فرنسيّة أصليّة تعود للقرن الثّامن عشر، وثُريّات فخمة يبدأ سعرها من 50 ألف يورو، وخزانة ذات أدراج مذهّبة، وأكثر من 500 قطعة فخمة سُتعرض للبيع ابتداءً من يوم الخميس 12 كانون الثاني، أي اليوم. المفاجأة كانت—على ذمّة المصدر— أنّ مُلكيّة كلّ هذه القطع كانت تعود لرفعت الأسد.
ما من عادتي أن أنشر خبراً قبل أن أتأكّد منه، لذا فقبل نشر الخبر قرّرت التحقّق من الموضوع بنفسي، وأن أتّأكّد من هويّة المالك السّابق لهذه المجموعة الخرافيّة، فاتّصلت بشركة المزادات الفرنسيّة آدير، وبزميلة صحفيّة فرنسيّة وطلبت منها تحرّي الأمر. وشيئاً فشيئاً بدت الصّورة تتّضح. فقد كان العنوان الذي حمله المزاد "قصر في حيّ فوش" أحد أرقى أحياء باريس وأغلى الأحياء السّكنيّة في العالم قاطبة. من يعرف باريس يعرف أنّ "فوش" هو أعرض جادّة سكنيّة فيها، وأنّه مشهور بقصوره الفارهة وبآلاف الأشجار التي تصطفّ على جنباته، وقد سكنه أوناسيس كما سكنه الفرع الفرنسيّ لعائلة روتشيلد الشّهيرة التي كانت امبراطوريّة العمل المصرفي العالم. ومن المعروف أنّ رفعت الأسد الملقّب بـ "جزّار حماة" كان يسكنُ في قصر خاص فاخر عنوانه 38 شارع فوش في باريس. كما أنّه كان قد فرّ قبل أمد قصير أيضاً إلى سورية بعد 40 عاماً قضاها في أوروبا في تشرين الأول من عام 2021 لتجنّب عقوبة الحبس لمدّة 4 سنوات بعد أن أدانه القضاء الفرنسيّ باختلاس أموال الدّولة السورية.
حين وجّهت الحكومة الفرنسية تُهَمها لرفعت الأسد رسمياً عام 2016 كانت قد حددت مصدرين رئيسيين لماله الحرام، فكان المصدر الأوّل لدخله غير المشروع النّهبَ والفسادَ الذي كان ضالعاً به حين كان قائداً لـ "سرايا الدفاع" واليد اليمنى لحافظ الأسد. وأمّا المصدر الثاني، كما يعلم الكثير من السوريين، فقد كان رشوة تزيد عن 300 مليون دولار دفعها له شقيقه حافظ الأسد مقابل مغادرته البلاد بعد محاولة انقلاب فاشلة عام 1984، جاء جلُّها من "أموال الرّئاسة".
أخبرتني زميلتي الصّحفيّة بأنّها وجدت مكتبة عربيّة من ضمن المزاد وبأنّ القطع المعروضة هي لأثاث مصادر. وصباح الأمس أرسلت لي خبراً نُشِرَ في الصّحافة الفرنسيّة أكّد شكوكنا في أن القطع الفاخرة المعروضة في المزاد هي لرفعت الأسد بالفعل. علاوة على ذلك تحقّقت وتأكّدت من أن اللّوحة الهولندية التي تعود إلى أوائل القرن الثّامن عشر (القطعة رقم 79 في المزاد) هي حقيقةً ذات اللوحة التي ظهرت خلف رفعت في مقابلة أجراها مع وسائل الإعلام من منزله منذ عدّة سنوات.
بوسع السّوريّين والجميع الاطّلاع على كتيب المزاد للتعرّف على حياة الدّعة والبذخ والتّرف الخياليّة التي تعيشها العائلة التي اغتنت على حساب إفقار الشّعب السِّوري وأوصلت سوريّة إلى الحضيض. المبكي في الأمر أنّ الأسرة تحيط نفسها بكلّ هذا النّعيم— وما سترونه ما هو إلا لمحة بسيطة فقط— في حين يقاسي شعبنا الأمرّين لتأمين أبسط مقوّمات الحياة، ناهيكم عن شعبنا المشرّد بالملايين في الخيام وفي أصقاع المعمورة.
تذكّروا هذه الصّور جيداُ حين يتلو عليكم إعلام العصابة الحاكمة أكاذيبه وحين يضع باللائمة على العقوبات في انهيار الاقتصاد وفي تهاوي الليرة، وشحّ الوقود، وفقدان الرّغيف بدلاً من أن يخبركم عن الأسرة الفاسدة التي نهبت ثروات الشّعب السّوري منذ أكثر من نصف قرن وما تزال.
