Syrian American Council Applauds IRGC Terror Designation,
Calls for Equivalent Terror Designations on Assad Regime

WASHINGTON D.C., April 10, 2019–The Syrian American Council applauds President Trump's announcement Monday designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization and calls on the administration to similarly consider terror designations for the Assad regime.

The IRGC decision matches the lived realities of millions of Syrian refugees who have been bombed, starved, tortured, and ultimately displaced from their homes by IRGC affiliates. The Syrian American Council also takes this opportunity to salute the people of Iran, who flocked to protest the IRGC, only to be brutally suppressed by members of the IRGC terror militia.

IRGC terror forces and their proxies were at the spearhead of some of the worst atrocities against the Syrian people. Recognizing IRGC forces for what they are – a terror group that operates by attacking civilians – is the least the United States can do to in the face of this sordid history of slaughter, especially in light of the fact that the IRGC has also propped the Assad regime, another terrorist organization, to continue to bombard and kill innocent civilians regularly to this day.

The Syrian American Council has received regular reports of IRGC’s efforts to permanently alter Syria's multi-sectarian fabric by propagating its extremist ideology among Syrians, often exploiting the extreme poverty in Syria in the process.

The IRGC has founded new militias and merged its proxies into regular regime forces in an attempt to dodge U.S. sanctions efforts. To ensure an up-to-date sanctions regime, and to ensure the killing of innocent civilians stops, American policymakers must keep pace with these developments and attain the same terror designations on IRGC-linked Assad regime military units including the 4th Division, Republican Guards, Tiger Forces, and Liwa Imam al-Baqir.
