SAC INVITES GOVERNORS TO MEET SYRIAN REFUGEES

SAC INVITES GOVERNORS TO MEET SYRIAN REFUGEES IN THEIR STATES WHO FLED ISIS AND ASSAD
Washington, DC - The Syrian American Council, America's largest and oldest grassroots Syrian American organization, joins in the call of major American organizations such as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and the U.S. Council on Catholic Bishops to reject the calls by over 25 governors to prohibit the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the United States. Our country is a nation of immigrants, and taking in refugees has been a noble bipartisan tradition since the founding of our country. We invite the governors who are calling for the closing of door to refugees to reconsider their decision and meet directly with refugee families in their states who come from all faiths and ethnic groups and have fled ISIS and Assad.
It goes without saying that, all refugees, including Syrian ones, must be properly and thoroughly screened before allowed into the US, and they currently are. There should be no short cuts, and funding to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for security checks must be properly increased to meet any increase in the number of refugees.

Syrians are the foremost victims of ISIS in the world. Syrians are fleeing because they risk being slaughtered by ISIS and the Assad regime, and most Syrian refugees are women or children.

With that said, the best way to help Syrian refugees is to end the slaughter in Syria by defeating both ISIS and Assad. Therefore, we call on the U.S. to work with regional allies to support Syrian rebels who are fighting and defeating ISIS throughout Syria and set up a safe zone that allows Syrians to stay in their homes safely protected from both ISIS and Assad.

Syrians do not want to be refugees; they want to stay home and live among their people in a free and democratic Syria.
