Nine Organizations Join Forces to Establish the American Coalition for Syria 

American Coalition for Syria (ACS) brings together diaspora and civic organizations to enhance coordination for free Syria

WASHINGTON D.C., November 3, 2021 –  On October 22, 2021, leaders from nine Syrian American organizations gathered in Washington, D.C. to usher in the next era of strategic cooperation for a free and democratic Syria. Leaders of Americans for Free Syria, Free Syria PAC, Kayla’s List PAC, Pro-Justice, Syria Faith Initiative, Syrian American Council, Syrian Christians for Peace, Syrian Emergency Task Force, and Syrian Forum had a full day of discussions and deliberative about the current challenges and how to better coordinate a more effective strategy on Syria advocacy. The deliberation ended by signing a document that organized future coordination, strategy, and decision-making. 

The American Coalition for Syria is open to other organizations that advocate for a better future for Syria that is enshrined in the values of freedom, equality, justice, and human rights. The American Coalition for Syria is a new initiative that will coordinate joint programs and endeavors that prioritize a constructive Syria policy based on United Nations Security Resolution 2254 that stipulates a pathway for a political transition that fulfills the aspirations of the Syrian people who have suffered from a brutal regime and its allies for the past ten and a half years. 

“Our gathering happened to fall just two days after we heard the horrific news of the October 20th attack on civilians in Ariha, Syria by the Syrian regime that killed at least 11 civilians and wounded at least 35, including several schoolchildren and medical workers.” said Mirna Barq, board member of Syrian Christians for Peace. “These ongoing war crimes are happening despite international movement towards rapprochement and at a time of a lack of a cohesive Syria policy by the administration. The American Coalition for Syria, which is a culmination of years of tireless work, was officially founded in the wake of this attack to remind the current administration and the international community that they must not turn their backs on the free Syrian people and must hold the regime accountable before any talks of reconciliation.”

The American Coalition for Syria will provide guidance during a time of uncertainty of the future of Syria, as well as serve as a moral compass to urge the United States to demonstrate its resolve to protect and uphold human rights by pursuing justice and accountability in Syria.
